Interest in turntables has really revived recently with more and more music lovers wanting to go back playing their treasured vinyl records again. No wonder, considering how fantastic they can sound when played on high quality equipment.
This site is a homage to Direct Drive Turntables from the golden era, the 1970's and 80's and covers a wide variety of DD turntables, from mid-priced to expensive high-end models.
Some major Direct Drive Turntable brands include Denon, JVC, Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood, Micro Seiki and of course Technics who introduced the world's first commercial Direct Drive turntable, the SP-10 back in 1970 and introduced the the all-time classic, the SL-1200/1210mkII in 1979 and it is still sold today 33 years later.
Only the big names like Denon, Sony and Matsushita: Technics & later JVC had enough financial strenghts to independently develop advanced Direct Drive turntables at that time. Most other brands had to enlist help from other specialst turntable manufacturers such as Micro Seiki in order to develop new models or go with belt drive.
To name one favourite manufacturer of DD Turntables is difficult, but for me it would probably be Denon. The company has been involved in making turntables for more than 50 years and record cutting machines since 1938. The fact that Denon has been involved in manufacturing record cutting lathes has probably been very important for the company in developing high quality turntables and cartridges. Denon has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary (Columbia Corporation founded in 1910 and later renamed Denon). Denon has made many important contributions to the development of tt's, for example the split-platter and the unique AC DD drive system that involved a magnetic reading head reading at the inner rim of the platter for unrivalled accuracy. Another noteworthy technology the company used was the Servo-Tracer tonearms. Denon still sells Direct Drive turntables and their current higher quality models include the DP-500M and the high-end DP-1300MKII.
Denon is maybe as well known for their fantastic MC cartridges with the venerable DL-103 (and its variations) which is surely one of the greatest all-time classics in HiFi. It has now been in production since 1962 and is still going strong.
