DD Turntables by MC

DD Turntables II

More Direct Drive turntables. These are some of my favourite direct drive models and represent the wide spectrum of DD TT's made in the 70's and 80's, from mid-priced to rather expensive models. Finally a Technics also on the site and what about the ultra rare Sanyo TP-1000.

- Cick on pictures to supersize.

Pioneer PL-630 fully Automatic turntable.

This is in my opinion one of the best FULLY AUTOMATIC DD turntables ever made.

It's a very well built turntable with a superb damped Floating suspension and a heavy steel sub chassie. Extremely unsensitive to feedback and vibrations.

Heavy and precision machined oversized platter which weighs about 2.2kg.

Heavy and solid turntable at 12kg.

Very nice arm with a super stable and unusual fulcrum and high quality low friction adjustable bearings.

The automatic arm movements are controlled electronically by a separate motor.

Beautiful design with an analogue Pitch meter that lights up in Quartz-off mode.

The Platter motor is of Pioneer's SHR - Stable Hanging Rotor design. It's a supremely made motor of the highest quality and it's ultra-strong and reaches nominal speed in 1/4 turn. Electronic braking for quick stop.

The plinth is made of special anti-resonance material under the Aluminium top and front.

All-in-all one of my absolute favourite Fully Automatic direct drive turntables.

Denon DP-2800 Marble top turntable.

A very heavy and solidly built TT with a plinth made of MDF and Marble.

Very heavy: 20kg. This means its supremely immune against vibrations and feedback.

DP-2000 Motor assembly all incorporated in Denon's classic and unique UFO style Aluminium housing. The whole unit can easily be lifted out of the plinth.

Quartz locked and quick start and electronic brake.

This one has a DA-307 arm with a unique resonance damper. The whole arm tube is isolated by a rubber gasket and held in place with a wire - very similar to Denon's DL-103 cartridges in fact!

This is a rare top-of-the line fully manual Sanyo TP-1000 DD turntable.

It's really almost a professional quality table with all parts of the highest quality.

Plinth made of cast Aluminium and the armboard is removable.

Rock solid and heavy construction.

This one has about 2kg of resonance absorbing bitumen sheets added under the plinth. It also has a  custom solid wood bottom plinth. It's a very heavy TT at over 21Kg.

The Acos Lustre GST-1 arm is of superior quality and features not only quick adjustable VTA but also quick adjustment of the mounting position for overhang adjustment - a lever moves the whole arm. Very low friction bearings and advanced stable fulcrum - a top quality arm.

Supremely made and precision machined platter which is even individually balanced-very unusual. Heavy, at about 2.5kg.

Strong heavy duty high quality motor.

This is one of my favourite Technics DD TT's: a SL-1410 MkII. There were several other similar versions of this MKII model: 1300, 1310, 1400,1500 and 1510. The difference was the level of automation. Basically the same players otherwise.

It's an extemely well built TT with a plinth in heavy non-resonant Cast Aluminium and a special resonance-dead sub plinth which is isolated by a superb floating suspension.

Very heavy for its compact size: 12kg. The motor is ultra strong and has super quick start/stop. It also has something very unusual, an individually balanced platter, just like a SP-10!

It has LED displays for the speed and also for the pitch - very cool looking.

These MkII players are a definite step up from the classic SL-1200MkII. The floating suspension and much heavier platter place them a step higher on my list, plus of course the cool LED displays.

The major weak point of these models is the automatic arm lifter that almost always break sooner or later. I've repaired many and it's a very difficult and time-consuming repair as the whole player needs to be disasambled.

A beautiful Denon DP 40 F Fully automatic TT.

This model is really a very nice and well built automatic tt.

Heavy at over 12kg with solid wood plinth.

One of Denon's best fully automatic turntables.

It's a predecessor to the 80's automatic models with Denon's speciality: the Dynamic Servo Tracer tonearm.

It has a really unique arm moving function - a touch sensor built into the locate knob activates the automatic arm movement. The round locate knob turns and sets the drop position. It's variable so you can set it to any position on the record and the arm will always drop there.

The arm is moved by an integral linear motor which is built directly onto the arm shaft. This means it's dead quiet and super smooth just like om the Servo Tracers. In fact its construction is similar.

This model is very rare and rarely seen for sale nowadays but very worthwhile looking for.

This is one very special DD Turntable and a must have for the vinyl enthusiast on the move! It's the LINEAR tracking and PORTABLE Sony PS-F5. Records can be played vertically or horizontally! It has a chassie made of steel and is very heavy for its miniature size, about 1.7 kg. It has a very small but heavy platter made of Strontium Ferrite. And best of all, it even has an ultra short TANGENTIAL arm - incredible really how they managed to cram all this into such a small package. In addition it's Fully Automatic! One can only imagine how much Sony spent on R&D to get this thing working! And it does work, and rather well actually. It has a built in RIAA and preamp so that headphones can be connected directly to it and you could listen to a record anywhere since it's also battery powered! There was even a more advanced model; the PS-F9 that featured Quartzlock and an electric record clamp.
